How to Achieve Success

Today finished a long week of graduation ceremonies for our family.   Jimmy and I celebrated our child graduating from Pre-k to Kindergarten and both nieces having ceremonies with the same message.....onward to bigger and better things.

As I was sitting in my niece’s ceremony and listening one of many speeches during her commencement exercise, the speaker grabbed my attention with his “talk” of everything you ever needed to know I learned in Kindergarten.  What a fantastic book.  Of course, I am an avid fan of Leo Buscaglia.  You know there are some people that touch you in ways not many can.  People you are drawn to because of their kind spirit, their wisdom and the respect they have for others.  As I continue to study on how to achieve a successful life, I am reminded of what Jack Canfield teachers in his book “The Success Principles” surround yourself with positive, successful people and rid your life of those that want to push you down.  It has been such a joy to watch Anna Grace grow and to re-learn the lessons she is learning as she prepares for Kindergarten.  As adults, I think perhaps we may need to be reminded of these principles and as I attended today’s service the speaker did just that with me.  I want to share briefly his 3 points.
Do Right-be trustworthy.   Isn’t that so true.  In our relationships, we yearn to have relationships in our lives that exemplify trust.  We want to be around people we can trust and not worry about or participate in the negative noise of people who must lack something inside of themselves that find the need   to belittle someone else in order to “puff up” themselves either by words or secret ways.  I once heard a sermon about echos and sound.  Once you speak something, the sound travels forever.  Forever is a very long time.
Do your Best!  When I was a youth minister, I participated in a training on Sullivan’s Island in South Carolina.  It was a documentary that was produced by Lou Holz.  If you are a college football junkie like I am, you know Lou Holz was one of the finest coaches in college football history.  He led the Fighting Irish to many championships on and off the gridiron.  We need to always give our best in everything.  Make a difference.  I was reading a blog from Lee Crockwell today and he talked about how we need to do one thing each day that is truly a difference in someone’s life or in something.  If we all pay it forward and made a difference, I wonder where would our nation or world for that matter be.  We wouldn’t have some of the social issues we have today.  Tom’s Shoes is a perfect example.  For every pair of Tom’s shoes you purchase, he (the CEO) gives a pair of shoes to children that do not have shoes to wear.  I am ordering mine tomorrow.
Treat others the way you want to be treated.  I believe that might be a paraphrase of the Golden Rule which incidentally is the motto for the Four Seasons Hotel.   During my years at Camp Glisson, we passed down the legendary tale about the tree.  It was a tree in the forest that needed to come down but the village didn’t have a way to bring the tree down. Everyday the village sent someone out to the tree to yell at the tree. To tell the tree how useless it was and how ugly it was.  This went on for days until eventually the tree died.  The tree died because the spirit had been broken.

Wow!  What lessons we as adults need to be reminded.  When there is adversity in our lives, perhaps we need to step back and have a glass of milk and cookies and take a nap before we break the three lessons re-learned today.
