The Eyes behind the lens Whew.....for a little bit I almost feel as though I should be wearing red shoes and a little dog named Toto following close behind for at Waters Mill we have been in an absolute Whirlwind with all the activities. I LOVE IT!!!! I love being busy. This past week was no different. I have been anticipating the arrival of Mike Colon and his workshop attendees for a photo shoot at Waters Mill with a southern dinner to follow. I must confess although I study the wedding industry at great lengths I am not as savvy on the photography end of things as I am with the floral, food and decor. However, all of that change with a simple on-line chat between my husband, Jim and Mike Colon. Jimmy and I were relaxing late one Friday night in February when he received a text from his partner,Kevin Ellison, of Waters Mill Photography that Mike Colon was on-line for a chat for 15 minutes. Jimmy jumped up from the sofa screaming something like...Mike Colon on-line be back in a minute. I was familiar with Mike’s name because Jim and Kevin had both just signed up for a workshop and Mike Colon’s name was on my bank statement. Being the sometimes sarcastic one, I yelled to Jimmy,” tell him (Mike) to come to Waters Mill and I will cook for him. The minutes rocked on and Jimmy came upstairs with the devilish little smile I have come to love and said Ok....you are cooking dinner for Mike Colon. I was a little taken back but at this point I had not researched Mike. Later, I began my studying of Mike Colon and his work. I began to get a little apprehensive and a bit nervous. Not because I didn’t think Waters Mill could not perform but because it is my nature to do the very best for whomever I serve and I wanted to serve Mike and his attendees well. As the months narrowed down to the weeks and days of anticipation of Mike’s arrival,I become a little more nervous each day as Kevin and Jim gave me instant updates on who Mike was. Finally, I decided it was time to breath, relax and be who I am to serve Mike the best. Wednesday I finished up last minute details with my Mom and my amazing staff. Everything was just near perfection when Mike arrived. As soon as I met him, all the worries and uncertainties melted away. During the afternoon, I had the opportunity to catch glimpses of Mike at work and it became evident to me why Mike Colon’s work is so impressive. It’s because Mike himself is impressive. One of the greatest benefits of my profession is that I have the opportunity to meet some amazing and talented people. I have worked with many God gifted artists but many of them carry the ego that never needs inflating. Not so with Mike. I learned just thru watching him photograph how unpretentious he is and that not only does he shoot with his eyes but he shoots with his heart. You can feel that Mike loves people and that is what I believe influences his work to be off the chart. It was such an honor to work with Mike and to serve him. Mike, I pray that God will allow our paths to cross again and I can be afforded the opportunity to grow a little more with Mike Colon. Success is not always evaluated by the change in the bank account but perhaps by the friendships we develop from crossing paths. Thanks Mike for making my life a little richer. May God continue to bless you and your family has you continue to let your light shine thru the lens of a camera. |
