Southern Style I recently came across an article in a magazine from March 2005 which flooded my mind with childhood memories. The gist of the article was about Appalachian cooking and traditions. In the South, we celebrate and mourn with bounties of food. This has certainly been true in my family heritage. I still remember the night of my father's accident only hours afterward our house was filled with caring friends and family all in hand with their favorite dishes to help with our grief process. I can't even remember eating that night but I can still see in my mind the long Walton style table in my parents house filled with food, the counters filled with food and the dining room table filled with desserts. Food that night was comfort with the many friends. We broke bread and shed tears remembering my Dad. I come from long traditions of southern cruisine. My mother still plants a 2 acre garden each year and delights when the first harvest comes to the table for us to partake. The groom's cabin at Waters Mill once was the home to my grandfather's salt cured country ham. Recently, I was told from a former commissioner of Lumpkin County how deals where closed for our county with my grandfather's country ham. We never knew. Having come from a long tradition of southern cooks, the traditions and recipes have been passed down to me. We use many of these same recipes at Waters Mill. People will not remember the color of the bridesmaid dresses at your wedding but you better believe they will remember the bounty of food Waters Mill will have prepared with love for your celebration. That's how we do it....Southern Style. |
